You guys. I have to tell you about this fabulous new store in downtown Geneseo — MIVA. MIVA is owned by Morgan Thurman, a relative newcomer to the area. I got to sit down with Morgan yesterday to talk business, products, mission, and family. It was clear to see that this fun-loving gal has such a palpable love for her family, a passion for the earth, and a generous soul.
Morgan spoke so lovingly of her family that is no surprise to learn the boutique name MIVA is an acronym for each member of her family– Morgan herself, daughter Imogen, son Vincent, and husband Andy. Morgan describes MIVA as “urban trends meets the great outdoors.” This approach stems from her own life experience as a lover of big cities and the outdoors. Moving from Chicago to Geneseo, Morgan found herself craving the city life, while also appreciating the natural beauty of Henry County.
Her passion for the outdoors drives her mission to seek out environmentally friendly vendors and products, right down to her boutique design. She uses repurposed furniture, crates, lampshades, and artwork to house and display products. My favorite piece in her shop is her mother’s childhood dresser. What an awesome way to re-use meaningful furniture to display jewelry.
Many of the products on the shelves represent a greater purpose– donating scarves or headbands to children with cancer, providing clean water in developing countries, and providing livable wages for Indian artisan women.
Morgan offers clothing for men, women, and kiddos that is both unique and adorable. Everything that I touched was so soft and fabulous. And the candles– my word. You have to smell the bourbon one. I’ll be going back to pick up a few of those for myself!
MIVA is located above The Cellar on State Street in Geneseo. You can visit Morgan in the store on Thursdays from 4-8pm or Fridays and Saturdays from 10-5. Enjoy some of my images from her one-of-a-kind boutique!
